Word Counter
Paste or type your text and watch the counts update instantly: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, plus estimated reading and speaking time. A live word counter is handy whenever you are working to a limit — a 500-word college essay, a 280-character social post, a meta description under 160 characters, or a speech timed to the minute. Because the counts update on every keystroke, you can trim or expand as you write instead of pasting into another app to check. Nothing is uploaded — everything is counted right in your browser.

How the word counter works
The counter analyzes your text on every keystroke. Words are runs of non-whitespace characters. Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (period, exclamation or question mark). Paragraphs are blocks separated by one or more blank lines. Reading and speaking times divide the word count by typical paces.
Formula
reading minutes = words ÷ 200 speaking minutes = words ÷ 130where 200 wpm is an average silent reading pace and 130 wpm a comfortable speaking pace. Times under a minute are shown in seconds.
Notes & assumptions
- Reading speed varies by person and difficulty — 200 wpm is a common average.
- Sentence detection is approximate; abbreviations like "e.g." may count as endings.
- Calculations are for general information only.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages is 500 words?
Roughly one page double-spaced or half a page single-spaced in a standard word processor using a 12-point serif font with one-inch margins — the typical college essay setup. A 1,000-word essay is about two double-spaced pages, and 2,500 words is around five. Page counts shift with font size, spacing and margins, so use word count as the more reliable measure when an assignment specifies a length.
Does the word counter count characters with or without spaces?
It shows both. "Characters with spaces" counts every character you type, including spaces, tabs and line breaks, which is the figure platforms like Twitter/X and SMS use. "Characters no spaces" strips all whitespace, which some academic and translation jobs require. Having both lets you check against whichever limit applies.
How long does it take to read or say this many words?
The tool estimates reading time at about 200 words per minute, a common average for silent adult reading, and speaking time at roughly 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. So 1,000 words is about a five-minute read or a seven-to-eight-minute speech. Adjust your expectations for dense or technical material, which reads more slowly.
How is a "word" counted?
A word is any run of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. That means hyphenated terms like "well-known" count as one word, while a number like "3.14" also counts as one. This matches how most word processors and essay graders count, though results can differ slightly from one program to another.
Is my text private — is anything uploaded?
Yes, it's private. The counter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript; your text is never sent to a server, stored, or logged. You can paste sensitive drafts, confidential notes or unpublished work and close the tab to clear it. Nothing leaves your device.
